002 . : Okumura Yukio [VIDEO]

[Yukio’s centered in the feed, having turned the camera on purposely this time. He’s wearing the same black uniform jacket that he arrived in, but there are dark circles forming beneath his eyes that weren’t there a few days ago. Not that he was sleeping terribly well before his arrival in Nesreca (or... ever, really), but the sudden relocation has been exceedingly stressful for him.

He’s smiling, though. Now that he’s had a chance to acclimate it’s time for some more questions, and there’s no reason to be unpleasant about it.]

I’m curious to know just what assets we have to work with in this place. I understand that food and supplies are difficult to come by, so I would appreciate some more information about Credinta, as well as what may be available on this side of the river.

[His expression turns a bit more serious.]

For those of you who have been trapped here longer... Have any of you encountered either Libitina or her master in person?

Not yet, but they can't be that hard to come by. A bookstore should have some.

[Pauses, rubbing the back of his head. This bit hasn't so much as occurred to him.]

Er... How is that relevant, if I may ask?

[You're dealing with someone who actually, y'know... went to school, Allen. Try to keep up.]

If supplies are delivered to the city, there might be maps with the routes suppliers take. [And the part where they might learn when shipments are. For... gathering supplies. >>;]

[Gosh darn you and your fancy education, mister.

That gets a bit of a blank stare from Allen, who's still trying to apply this to their hunt for Libitina and her master, but let it not be said that he isn't quick or resourceful. The word 'supplies' triggers a gear-shift soon enough, and it's clear by the downward turn of his mouth — unhappy, but definitely not unwilling — that he's caught on. Although he's not too keen on the idea of making off with shipments of supplies, with winter just a few months away and its threat of possibly rendering even fishing impossible, it would do them well to stock up in advance.]

[ a quick nod ] Would the docks be a good place to look?

[It doesn't occur to him to look for an airport. They don't have those back home.]

[He started high school this year and everything.

Now, now, Allen, it's mostly the routes he's after... not that stocking up isn't a good idea. Whole shipments, though? That's probably not a good idea. Nor is it good for anyone's conscience.]

Yes. Do you know if there's a landing strip anywhere near the city?

[What's a high school, Yukio. Are those the same as public schools, Dame schools, and Sunday schools.

They're on the same page then! Everyone gets to eat more with minimal guilt.]

A landing... Pardon?

[Siiiiigh. Just sit and let him teach you, dude.

Yukio blinks, a bit confused himself for a moment. Ah, but wait! Time-shenanigans were mentioned during initial explanations of this place, and if people can be pulled from different worlds, why not significantly different times?]

... A place where planes land? [Definitely questioning. You do know what planes are, right?]

[He catches that questioning tone and shrugs lightly in reply, a silent 'wish I could'.]

[ hedging, definitely hedging: ] Are they ships of some sort?

[Granted, people usually say 'dock', but he can't think of anything else.

Where he's from, gliders and hot air balloons are the pinnacle of aviation science. The word 'aeroplane' did exist, but actual usage in daily life was fairly unheard of. It doesn't even occur to Allen that 'plane' could be short for something else.]

[Alright, this planning session has been derailed so that Allen may be taught things that Yukio never would have thought he'd have to teach people.]

Airplanes. Methods of transport that fly through the air.

... What year is in where you're from, Walker-san?

[Don't worry, they'll get back to it eventually. Allen will make sure of it if Yukio doesn't beat him to it first.]

[ grey eyes rounding ] Like hot air balloons, you mean? Ah, it's—[CENSORED FOR TROLLSHINO'S FAILURE TO PROVIDE AN EXACT YEAR]—back home.

[ collecting himself soon enough to add in good humour: ] I can't speak for you, but I always thought we were plenty modern.

[Whoa. That... is pretty far back, Allen. Really, he should've guessed with the information presented, but it's still a shock to hear that sort of thing straight out.]

It's 2010 where I'm from.

[ again taking it in stride: ] I gathered as much! It would be a poor show of progress otherwise.

[ He laughs then, ruefully. ] Seems that's the period many people are from. This must be quite a shock for you.

A bit, yes. [He adjusts his glasses stiffly.]

[Blinks. You're reminding him an awful lot of someone right now.]

Not half as much as it'll likely be for me, if that's any consolation! But as you were saying— Will it help us if we can find this landing strip?

[I HAVEN'T THE FOGGIEST IDEA OF WHO YOU COULD BE SPEAKING OF.]

... Yes. It'll be another means of transport that we can track. Possibly a mode of transportation we could take advantage of it the need ever arose.

[NONE AT ALL MOVING ON.]

[ nodding ] I see.

[Paaaaaaaaaause.]

You mean they're large enough to carry shipments then? And everyone here?

It would depend on the type of plane used, but anything large enough to carry supply shipments would easily be large enough for everyone here.

... Piloting it would be the real trouble. [A pause.] But that's not something to think about unless there are no other options.

[Like escape. Escaping and going home is a better plan.]

[Allen nods in agreement, it's best if things never got to the point where they would have to resort to something so drastic. Piloting issues aside, where would they go? It's not like they can simply fly this 'plane' home.

(And boy is it hard to imagine something that huge taking flight. What if it falls.)]

Right, so we'll look for the docks and this 'landing strip'. What does it look like? [ quirking a smile ] Not that the name itself doesn't give me a few ideas, but I reckon it's best to be sure.

It would be pretty much exactly what is sounds like. A long strip of flat land, probably lined with lights on either side.

Noted. I'm assuming it'll be situated away from any and all buildings too?

[Since these 'planes' sound like they come in considerable sizes.]

That's right.

We'll want to be looking near the city's outskirts then, probably―[ a faint sigh ]―in the direction furthest away from us. When would you like to get started? And do you think there's any information to be found on our side of the river?

As soon as possible.

[He pauses, thoughtful.] Just how much exploring have you done within Credinta? Have you ever notice anything out of place in the ruins? Maybe odd markings or any other evidence of how this place might've been destroyed?

[Allen takes a moment to consider the question, turning to look out of the window as he does. Everything about Nesreca is wrong, a city-sized blight on the earth. He thinks of the prevalent rust, too much of it dried blood, of open graves stark under the sun like sullen exclamation marks, then turns back to Yukio with a slight shake of his head.]

You can still see― Remains everywhere and even gunpowder sometimes, but it's hard to tell what happened. People must have fought or at least tried to run, I don't think many of them made it.
