Character Information
Character Name: Okumura Yukio
Canon: Ao no Exorcist
Canon Point: Chapter 50
Is your character Dead, Undead or Alive: Alive
History: Yukio’s got a wiki overhere, but the history section’s pretty out of date. I’ve written my own here that’s provides more detail and is current to his pull point.
Personality:
Yukio’s first appearance paints a pretty simple picture. The younger of a set of fraternal twins, he’s Rin’s opposite in nearly everything. Where Rin is brash and loud, Yukio is generally quiet and polite. Where Rin is... well, kind of stupid, Yukio approaches a level near genius in his chosen fields. He’s generally serious and driven to succeed, achieving success through plain hard work and determination, all while wearing a kind smile.

His characterization is expanded on when we learn of his status as an exorcist and just what it took for him to get to where he is. Though he spent the majority of his early childhood in tears, fearing the creatures that he could see hiding in the shadows (the ones that even his older brother couldn’t protect him from), an invitation from his adoptive father turned all that around. Fujimoto gave Yukio the chance to fight alongside him, offering him the tools and training he would need so that he could, with time, succeed on his own merit. He could be the one to protect Rin from the monsters that would one day come for him . He would never have to live in fear of the dark again.

Of course, that sort of intensive training from such a young age takes it’s toll, but it was never something Yukio fought against. He embraced the lifestyle of the exorcist (though not as wholeheartedly as we’re led to believe at first), leaving any semblance of a normal childhood behind. He trained and studied from age seven to thirteen when he earned his Meister in both Doctor and Dragoon, worked his butt off in normal school to earn a scholarship to True Cross Academy, and became a lecturer in the exorcist cram school when he and Rin entered the Academy, all the while taking on missions where appropriate and applicable. Did I mention he only sleeps about four hours a night? Yeah... overachiever? You could say that. It’s amazing the kid finds time to eat.

Things changed a lot for Yukio when Fujimoto died. In spite of the secrets Yukio kept from Rin prior to their entrance to the Academy, the two of them always seemed to have a fairly decent relationship, but their father’s death brought to light the real barrier between them. For a time Yukio blamed Rin for Fujimoto’s death, sure that he was the weakness in their father’s heart that allowed Satan the chance to take him over. Though sad and angry, he suppressed those feelings until Rin finally called him out on his emotional shenanigans. He unloaded on Rin, tossing out blame and even telling his brother to "please die"... but when push came to shove, he couldn’t harm his only remaining family. Even with Rin charging at him, sword drawn and flames blazing, Yukio couldn’t bring himself to fire his weapon. Fujimoto died to protect Rin, his son, and Yukio’s connection with his brother was and still is just as deep.

Their mended relationship didn’t exactly loosen Yukio up, though. He’s rather strict (controlling, really) with his brother and with his students, insisting upon the importance of cooperation and responsibility. However, a deeper examination of his relationship with Rin, reveals an entirely different side of Yukio. Rin’s constant antics and careless decisions can draw out bouts of anger so intense that they almost border on bipolar. He tries very hard to reign that part of himself in and usually regains his composure fairly quickly, but when a guy represses as much as he does? He’s bound to explode eventually. Shura inspires similar outbursts with her antagonistic attitude. He can’t stand to see those with so much natural talent waste it, especially when he had to work so hard to get the things he has.

That doesn’t mean he’s a complete stick-in-the-mud, though. He knows a joke when he hears one and likes to take the occasional good-natured (and sometimes not-so-good-natured) jab at his older brother when he can. He likes to read SQ manga every month and he’s even popular with girls, though not especially good at dealing with them (he seems to have a crush on Shiemi, but he’ll likely never act on it.). Overall he’s quick-witted, calm and collected in a pinch, and a very likeable guy.

The Impure King Arc brought to light another facet to him that may prove tricky in the future. His encounter with Toudou inspired something that he hasn’t felt so acutely in a very long time: fear. Fear and uncertainty concerning himself, his motivations, and his feelings toward his brother. Though he never spoke out against it, he’s always resented the loss of his childhood to his exorcist training. He’s had to work so hard and suffer so much just so that he could one day protect his older brother. He’s admitted that he both loves and hates Rin, but the person he hates the most? Is himself, for feeling the way he does. It’s his duty to protect Rin, but (as far as Yukio’s concerned) Rin doesn’t understand or even acknowledge the weight that Yukio carries (has always carried), and so... that resentment and self-loathing will continue to build.

At his core, Yukio is a creature of conflict. Truth and lies, anger and calm, love and hate. He is flawed and frustrated and afraid, everything you’d think a young man in his position would be, but he’s very, very good at hiding it. Most of the time. More than one person has warned him of the danger of bottling his feelings away, fearing he might become a demon by accident should he let his anger and resentment pile up, but so it goes. That fear has only built further over the last few arcs, especially in the most recent canon. Between worrying check ups, Illuminati plots, and a lifetime of unanswered questions, Yukio is sick of being kept in the dark. Canon is quickly dragging him to what will likely be a point of no return where he’ll either have all his questions answered, or the life he’s working so hard to hold together is going to fall apart.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:

ABILITIES/STRENGTHS:
As stated above (it’s up there somewhere), Yukio is very intelligent. Where certain subjects are concerned he can practically be considered a genius, and has been labelled as such by many of his older colleagues. He’s not only the youngest person to ever qualify as an exorcist, but he did it by earning two Meisters at once at the tender age of thirteen.

He earned his Meisters and accomplished many other things through an incredible drive to succeed. From a very young age he’s worked tirelessly to achieve his goals, pressing on past his difficulties and shortcoming through sheer force of will.

Yukio is a Middle First Class exorcist with Meisters (certifications) in both the Doctor and Dragoon classes. He’s a brilliant Doctor, not only capable of handling most wounds or illnesses (with a focus on those inflicted by demons), but also extremely capable in Anti-Demon Pharmacology. Wikipedia defines Pharmacology as "the study of the interactions that occur between a living organism and chemicals that affect normal or abnormal biochemical function"... so add an anti-demon focus and you’ve got Yukio’s class. Did I mention he’s a teacher, too? Because he is. His Meister in Dragoon also makes him an excellent marksman with expertise in a wide range of firearms, including handguns, long-range rifles, and flamethrowers. Heck, if you believe some of the color art, he can sling a crossbow too. Shura describes his aim as "disgustingly accurate", and I’d have to agree. He can hit his target while on the move, or even without line of sight (because THIS! IS! MANGA! and nothing has to make sense), and he’s ambidextrous. What can’t this overachiever do?

While he doesn’t actually possess the title of "Tamer" (an exorcist that summons demon familiars to fight for them in battle), Yukio’s been shown to have the ability to summon demons when the right tools are on hand. Using special bullets that had been blessed by Naiads (water sprites) to complete a prearranged contract, he was able to summon eight at once on his first try, but his lack of experience and stamina at the time came back to bite him in the end.

Yukio didn’t inherit Satan’s flames at birth, leaving all the big, shiny powers to Rin... or so he thought. Recent events have shown that Yukio didn’t come away from the deal completely empty-handed. During his fight with Toudou, Yukio comes very close to being burned alive, but in a moment of desperate denial his eyes glow Satan-blue and Toudou backs off, claiming the retreat to be "instinctual". Since then we haven’t seen any further evidence as to what this power is/could mean, but it’s possible that Yukio’s demonic lineage might allow him some semblance of control over the demons of his world. I won’t be exploring this much without more canon on the subject.

WEAKNESSES:
Most of Yukio’s weaknesses are self-inflicted mental hang ups revolving around Rin, but it’s worth noting that physically? He only has the strength of a normal human. He’s young and in good shape, yeah, but when your brother has ridiculous demon strength and you’re constantly surrounded by monsters that want to kill you, it makes that piddly human strength pretty noticeable. He also has terrible eyesight. Seriously, just abysmal. Take his glasses away and he’s pretty boned, which is why he always seems to have an extra pair somewhere on his person.

Now on to the psychological problems! 8D

Yukio is intensely jealous of his brother. He’s had to put in so much work and sacrifice so much to get where he is, yet it seems that Rin always manages to come out on top. He’s supposed to be protecting Rin in his father’s stead, but he can never seem to make things work out as they should. More often than not Rin ends up getting out of nasty situations without Yukio’s help, which only makes the jealousy worse, then that kinda snowballs on itself and turns into self-loathing. LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT YUKIO’S SELF-LOATHING. This kid hates himself. Really. He’s stated it outright in canon and likes to remind the reader every now and then in his personal mental monologues. He hates himself for all his imperfections. He hates himself for being unable to protect his brother and (in his own mind) not living up to the promise he made his father. He hates himself for hating Rin. The brotherly bond is there, of course, hidden beneath the pile of violence and messy teen emotions, but that doesn’t matter. He shouldn’t feel this way. He should be a better person than he is.

Take all of that and dump his slowly awakening demonic powers on top with a side of "oh God, the Vatican is watching my every move and possibly planning to kill my brother and I", and you’ve got a rough idea of Yukio’s current mindset.

Now, all of this would probably be easier to deal with if he would just talk to someone about his problems, but nope! Yukio’s got a bad habit of bottling everything inside, and in a world where pent-up negative emotions make you a target for demon possession? Yeah, kind of a problem. Yukio’s reminded of that danger pretty constantly, but it hasn’t stopped him yet. That "bad side" is generally kept locked away until Rin or Shura force it out with lots of antagonistic poking and prodding (or, in Rin’s case, lots of stupid), and then venting is generally explosive, but brief. Gotta get the cap back on quick, after all. Gotta stay in control... which is another problem really. He’s got a perfectionist streak a mile wide that only feeds back into his self loathing when things don’t go as planned… which happens far more than he’d like to admit.

Yukio looked to the ceiling, eyes wandering over imbedded light fixtures and overhead bins as he dutifully ignored any of the minor chatterings of the people around him, his students' included. Not that they were likely to be talking very much. Rin had dozed off again and the rest of them had been fairly quiet since the travesty that had been their lunch.

Note to self, never accept a sandwich that looks like it’s growing, even if it’s from Shiemi. Especially if it’s from Shiemi.

Their unusual silence after the initial excitement of the flight wasn’t exactly a surprise considering recent events. Losing Kamiki and Shima, and in such a way, was still a shock to think about. What the Illuminati could possibly want with Kamiki was beyond Yukio, and Shima’s betrayal… he hadn’t seen it coming. If his lifelong friends hadn’t suspected a thing, how could Yukio? And now they were headed to face the Illuminati head on. One Middle First Class exorcist, a puppet-wielding "moderator" and four ExWires versus an ancient organization that had just dealt the True Cross a massive blow seemingly with barely any effort. The same organization that torn already torn a hole between worlds, setting a slow apocalypse in motion. It was ridiculous, nearing suicidal...

A loud ding pulled the exorcist from his morbid thoughts, and when he looked up the fasten seatbelt sign was illuminated. He reached for his seatbelt and clicked it back into place, nudging his sleeping brother with an elbow to rouse him from his nap before looking down the row at the rest of his students, now his team, and taking in the varying levels of anxiety on every face with a light sigh. Whatever the situation, whatever was waiting for them in Inari, things would be difficult enough without Yukio adding to the mess. He would follow orders and keep his head as he always had, if only because someone had to. Especially now, when it seemed like the world was intent on falling to pieces.

They were beginning their descent, and Yukio was ready.
